Darjeeling is a town and municipality in the Eastern Himalayas in India, lying at an average elevation of 2,045 metres (6,709 ft) in the northernmost region of the state of West Bengal. Kangchenjunga, the world’s third-highest mountain, rises in north and is prominently visible on clear days.

Darjeeling has two major arterial roads: Hill Cart Road—which is a continuation of National Highway 110 connecting Siliguri at the base of the Darjeeling hills to Darjeeling—and Lebong Cart Road. The average width of Darjeeling’s roads is between 6 metres (20 ft) and 7 metres (23 ft).

 According to a Darjeeling Municipality report of 2008, a little over half (55%) of Darjeelings roads were both metalled (paved with asphalt, or bitumen) and motorable; the rest were too narrow to admit traffice whether concrete roads or unpaved. According to a 2018 article, illegal parking along narrow roads has created congestion for both pedestrians and wheeled transport.
